INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CONVERTER (SEE ABOVE):

Just type in the amount of INCHES in the left box and click on the button “Convert inches to cm” and find the corresponding amount of CM in inches on the right box! For instance, if you type 1 on the left, 2,54 will appear on the right due to the fact that an inch equals 2,54 cm. You can convert also partial inches (separated by a dot) into cm. Just type in, for instance 5.6 on the left for 5.6″ for 14.22cm to appear on the right. Please pay attention that a comma “,” does not work in this converter.

In order to convert CM to INCHES, we provide two options: a converter (cm to inches) and a multiplier. Select this converter HERE for a converter or use a multiplier of 0.3937 to multiply the amount of Cm into inches. For instance 10 (cm) x 0,3937 = 3,3937 inches.

Centimetres are thus easy to present in smaller or larger units of the metric system. For instance, 5 cm is 50 millimetres (mm) and 50 cm is 0,5 metres (m). A height of a person can be 180 cm, which is 1,8m. A size of a TV-screen that is 50″ (inches) is measured from corner to corner and equals 127cm.

Background behind the two different units of length

An inch as a measurement of length belongs to several systems, most common of which is the British Imperial System and the customary system of the United States. In proportion to the other units of the Imperial System, an inch has been called “one-twelfth”, which means that one inch is one twelfth of a foot and 1/36 of a yard (larger units). Today, the inch is used at least in the following countries, United States, United Kingdom, Canada (occasionally) and Australia (informally). In different times, the inch has had many different measures. For instance, it has been measured by peoples’ thumbs, pieces of plants and even flowers. Most recently, the “international inch” has been defined and standardized to be the prevailing proportion of other units.
The centimeter (or centimetre) on the other hand belongs to the metric system. The “centi” in this case means one part of a hundred (1/100) of the prevailing unit: meter (or metre). The larger unit for the centimeter is a decimeter, which equals 10 centimeters. The smaller unit, a millimeter is one tenth of a centimeter and ten millimeters equal one centimeter. The centimeter is more widely used in the world than the inch. Between different systems there exist many examples, that present length across the systems. These examples can be: size of a TV-screen, shoe size and disk length (vinyl and floppy disks). In practice, it is easy to convert between the units with a good tool. Occasionally a converter is necessary when travelling abroad, reading or understanding a conversation.
